Probuild’s Darling Harbour IMAX development The Ribbon was a hive of activity on Thursday afternoon, with dozens of workers seen packing up and flatbed trucks leaving the gates as security guards stood watch.
One worker told news.com.au contractors were being allowed to collect their tools and equipment but no materials.
“We’re allowed to come back again tomorrow before they lock it up,” he said.
He said no one had been told anything beyond that, or given any indication of when work might resume.
“That’s it,” he said, adding there had been no hint of any problems with the company prior to Wednesday afternoon.
He said the mood among the workers was “fine”. “It’s unfortunate this happens,” he said.
Another subcontractor who had come to the site to collect his payslip said “no one knows what’s going on”.
“We get paid, whether my boss gets paid I dunno,” he said.
As another group of workers said their goodbyes outside worksite just after lunch, one was overheard joking, “See you at the dole.”
